The American painter Roy Lichtenstein (1923 - 1997) is famous for his comic book appropriations. The source for this work is a 1962 DC comic 'Secret Love', taken by artist and painstakingly hand painted to create Drowning Girl 1963. Such is the popularity of the painting that the New York MoMA used it to advertise their 1989 Lichtenstein retrospective.
