Arts Menagers Navy

The firstSalon du Arts Menagers - Exhibition of Domestic Arts - took place in Paris in 1923, intended to display the newest in home appliances. Francis Bernard became involved in 1930, his poster featuring the character‘La Marie Méchanique’, a symbol of the replacement of the domestic woman by appliance. A broom bearing female robot, Marie was to be the figurehead of the show for the next 45 years, appearing on the annual poster in a slightly different guise each year. Bernard and Marie retired their services to the salon in 1975, however the show itself continued up until 1983. If only every two-storey house had its very own housecleaner Marie!
