Arts Menagers White

The first Salon du Arts Menagers - Exhibition of Domestic Arts - took place in Paris in 1923, intended to display the newest in home appliances. Francis Bernard became involved in 1930, his poster featuring the character ‘La Marie Méchanique’, a symbol of the replacement of the domestic woman by appliance. A broom bearing female robot, Marie was to be the figurehead of the show for the next 45 years, appearing on the annual poster in a slightly different guise each year. Bernard and Marie retired their services to the salon in 1975, however the show itself continued up until 1983. In 1953 Marie seems to have the right idea, watching on as her beau paints her the ideal home.
