We are absolutely delighted to bring this extremely rare piece of French graphic history (and magic) to you!
A maquette is a preliminary one-off painting made by the artist before the poster goes to print, allowing the text to be formatted and the colours to be tested. The fact that this one happens to be by modern day graphic design King and long-time TGF favourite, Michel Quarez (1938 - 2021), makes it all the more special.
The materials used are pretty simple, it is obvious that Quarez grabbed whatever he had on hand, which happened to be a c.2000 calendar and used gouache to paint his design. He hand-made a little cardboard frame, which he’s signed including dimensions and then, as shown here, has put the plastic overlay with the words ‘Creative la Seine Saint Denis’ in the corner.
Long associated with works for the local Council, here we have a chance to see an artist at work, sketching and painting his ideas to then be accepted for production.
Condition
The Galerie only deals in original vintage posters. As such, each poster is unique and may show signs of age. We think this is part of their authenticity and beauty! However, we are more than happy to provide a condition report.
