The Summer Music Festival in Lucerne, Switzerland began in 1938 as a series of concerts in the gardens of Wagner's Villa Tribschen, on the shores of Lake Lucerne. The festival gained popularity at the outbreak of WWII, an alternative for those composers, musicians and conductors who did not want to perform in the traditional German and Austrian festivals. Today the festival attracts orchestras from around the world.
